Surge Suppression Incorporated® Connects to Nursing with Scholarship

April 10, 2007 - As Travis Sanders views it, there are a lot of similarities between the training of nurses at Okaloosa Walton College and his company, Surge Suppression Incorporated®of Destin, FL.

"You are teaching your nursing students how to monitor and treat patients and our company is monitoring and treating power supply needs of our customers," said Sanders, the president and CEO of Surge Suppression Incorporated® whose unobtrusive corporate offices are tucked away on a Destin side street.

There is another analogy that really drives home the connection when you look at the Surge Suppression Incorporated® web site and read the reference letters regarding the successes they have had protecting medical facilities. At one major hospital in Nashville, TN Surge Suppression Incorporated® protected 29 pieces of equipment in their radiology department. From the 3-month quarter prior to the Surge Suppression Incorporated® products being installed to the 3-month quarter after the installation, the radiology department experienced a 42% decrease in service calls and a 79% decrease in unscheduled service hours.

"The result is the same. Our products help protect electrical systems, critical medical equipment and communication systems. That helps improve equipment reliability and thus patient safety and care," said Sanders whose company recently made a donation of $12,000.00 to fund the Surge Suppression Nursing Scholarship Endowment through the OWC Foundation. "Our community as well as our country needs more nurses. I've been impressed by the way the college and the healthcare community got together to make the nursing and healthcare programs happen. Being a triple bypass heart patient, I have a great respect and admiration for the nursing profession," states Sanders.

Collaborating with the college on the scholarship, Sanders notes that education has played a big role in the growth of Surge Suppression Incorporated® since it began in 1982. "OWC is student focused and we have a customer focused strategy," he said. "Our technical teams have to be educated to provide technical support. They have to continuously interact with customers, again not unlike nurses with patients."

In accepting the contribution for the scholarship, Dr. Bob Richburg, president of OWC, said he would welcome Sanders back as a guest lecturer on the technology or the nursing side of the house.
